‘The new Qantas ad made me ugly cry and I’m not ashamed’


A new, pro-vaccine advertising campaign from Australia’s favourite airline has those with family and friends overseas reaching for the tissues.

“I’m gonna see you soon, OK?” Six words I have been desperate to say but haven’t been able to. You see, I live in New York, my family lives in Melbourne and for the past two years, the pandemic and continued Draconian border closures have kept us apart, even though I’ve been fully vaccinated since May.

I’m not alone, either. There are an estimated one million Australians living and working overseas at any given time. In addition to that, nearly half of us were born overseas or have parents that were. There are just so many loved ones that are looking forward to the day when we can say, “I’m gonna see you soon, OK?”

They’re words that appear in the latest ad for Qantas, uttered by a farmer down the phone to someone special. There are other stories, ones that so beautifully represent the adventurous Australian spirit. There’s a family that wants to recreate their mother’s trip to Disneyland and a young couple who had planned their wedding in Singapore.

It’s not the tone-deaf, fear-based message that was delivered in the government’s ‘Arm Yourself’ from the government but the hopeful one we all need right now—what life will look like when more Australians are vaccinated and those kept out of the country can return to share a hug with the people they love.

My tear ducts never stood a chance. Within five seconds, the ad not only brought me to full-blown, lump-in-your-throat ugly crying. As it turns out, it’s reduced much of the online community to sniveling messes. But it’s also made clear just how many of us are yearning for international loved ones.

“Thank you for this beautiful ad…. I miss my parents in Penang and my brother in HK so very very much. I cannot wait to see them,” one user commented on YouTube.

“My sister and her kids live overseas, and I haven’t seen them in over 18 months. I miss them so much it hurts. So that Qantas ad got me in the feels. If getting vaccinated every week would let me see my sister again soon I would do it,” netball star Liz Ellis tweeted. There are countless others sharing a similar sentiment.

The ad wraps up the farmer staring down at a photo of his presumed daughter. A flight attendant puts her hand on the back of his seat reassuringly to tell him, “We’ll be there, soon.”

As Australia’s vaccination rollout gains momentum, I watch from afar with tremendous hope I’ll be like that farmer someday in the not too distant future. Business class would be nice, too.
